"Our responsibility now is to keep up with that growth with infrastructure," Gruber said, referring to the city's ongoing intersection and roadway projects.

The Coastal Conservation League, in collaboration with other organizations, is working to protect rural and natural areas from overdevelopment. They are doing this by placing properties or large tracts of land in conservation, ensuring the preservation of the Lowcountry's unique rural character and natural resources.
Bob Crimian, a project manager for the Coastal Conservation League, emphasizes the importance of this work as cities like Hardeeville annex large rural tracts of land. He highlights the unintended consequences of population growth, such as the loss of the very qualities that make the Lowcountry an attractive place to live.
"Improving rural zoning and preserving farming, forestry, and hunting are key to protecting these areas," Crimian said.
In contrast, Hilton Head Island, a popular vacation destination, has seen a slight decrease in population. Mayor Alan Perry attributes this to a "correction" after the COVID-19 pandemic, with some residents re-evaluating their decision to move to the area. The town is now focusing on attracting younger generations through workforce development projects and new healthcare services.
Overall, the growth and development of these Lowcountry cities highlight the complex dynamics of urban expansion, the importance of planning, and the need to balance economic growth with the preservation of natural and rural areas.
