Cyclospora Outbreak: How to Stay Safe with Salad and Produce (2026)

The recent Cyclospora outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce has raised concerns about food safety, but it's important to stay informed and take practical steps to protect ourselves and our families. While the outbreak has affected thousands of people nationwide and led to two deaths, Consumer Reports reassures us that salad and lettuce don't need to be avoided entirely. However, it's crucial to understand the global nature of produce production and the potential for contamination during processing.

James Rogers, a food-safety expert, emphasizes the importance of handling produce carefully once it reaches home. While washing can reduce the number of parasites, it cannot eliminate them entirely. Rogers suggests washing in cold running water, washing hands before and after handling, and cleaning cutting boards to minimize the risk of contamination. When produce can be cooked, heating it to at least 158 degrees Fahrenheit is the most effective way to kill the parasite and any other foodborne bacteria.

For those who prefer raw produce, especially firmer foods like melons and cucumbers, Consumer Reports recommends scrubbing or peeling before slicing to prevent the transfer of outside contaminants. Historically, leafy greens, herbs, raspberries, blackberries, snow and snap peas, and green onions have been linked to cyclospora infections. It's also worth noting that the outbreak has led to a surge in patients seeking testing at urgent cares across North Carolina.

In response to the outbreak, the Food and Drug Administration is investigating possible links to nationally sold lettuce brands, and demand for locally grown greens is growing. Some local markets are even selling out. While the recalled products are now past their best-by dates and should no longer be available in stores or restaurants, it's essential to remain vigilant and follow good food safety practices to prevent future outbreaks and protect public health.
